Features of Shahdad Tarantula

Tarantula Strait of Kerman is the largest strait of Lut Desert in Iran. This area was identified during the study and research of the central pit rivers.

The central pit is the largest pit in the Lut Desert into which permanent rivers such as the Kal-e-Shur and Kal-e-Lut enter. In addition to permanent rivers, seasonal rivers also enter this huge pit, the widest of which is the Khoshkroud. This seasonal river originates from Pakhto Mountain and after passing east of Kalut Pouz-e Kal, it cuts off the Shahdad-Nehbandan road and continues to the central pit.

Shahdad tarantula has about 20 km of wall at different heights and 30 km of wall less route. Hence, this strait with a length of about 50 km is the largest strait of Lut desert. This is while the beautiful strait of “Zaban-e Mar”, which in the past was considered the largest strait of the Lut desert, is only 7 km in the highest part.

One of the indescribable beauties of this region is the 60 km route that is located after Shahdad. The area where there is a salt mine and you can find one of the amazing blessings of nature. There are tourists who stop in this area and in addition to seeing the salt rocks, take some of them with them for home use.

To reach the beautiful tarantula strait, it is enough to reach the salt mine after passing the 60 km route of Shahdad-Nehbandan road. After the salt mine, you have another 22 kilometers to reach the Pouz-e Kal. Pouz-e Kal is multi-layered clods that have created a special beauty in Lut desert. Three kilometers above Pouz-e Kal, where the asphalt road meets the Khoshkroud River, you have to leave the road to the north. After traveling 8 km in the riverbed of Khoshkroud River, a 90-meter area of the Khoshkroud River appears.

What attracts the eyes in this part is the walls with a height of 100 meters with a slope of 15 to 100% and amazing grooves that have doubled the beauty of this section. Finally, by following a 25-kilometer route on the Khoshkroud path, you will reach Tarantula Strait. Tourists should keep in mind that the temperature in this desert is very high. So if you come to visit this area in the cold seasons of the year, you will feel the temperature of more than 40 degrees Celsius at noon and in the shade.

Strait biodiversity

Inside Tarantula Strait, you can see all kinds of insects and living things such as red ladybugs, large and small butterflies, moths, flies in different sizes and colors, especially yellow, small ants, several species of birds, and, most mysteriously, solar tarantulas. What is interesting about solar tarantulas is their yellow color with a belly and legs full of hair and feathers that attract the attention of every viewer.

Solar Tarantulas

The solar tarantula has two strong jaws that make a hissing sound when in danger. The female of this species is larger than the male and has a speed of up to 16 kilometers per hour.

The interesting thing about this tarantula is that it hunts at night and rests in the shade away from the sun during the day. Hence this tarantula is called solar tarantula. If you travel to Shahdad Tarantula Strait, you will surely see a lot of solar tarantulas on your way.

The camel tarantula has a venom in its jaw that anesthetizes its prey. But the biting effect of this type of tarantula is not dangerous for humans. You should only see a doctor to prevent infection.
